Codex Free Rate-Limit Resets: Where to Find Them and How Many You Can Get

A practical summary of OpenAI Codex rate-limit reset banking: eligible Plus and Pro users may receive one launch reset and can earn additional resets through referrals, but timing, eligibility, and expiration rules apply.

OpenAI recently added a useful small feature to Codex: rate-limit reset banking. In plain terms, it lets you keep a usage-limit reset and use it later when you actually need it.

If you are an eligible Plus or Pro user, you may see one available reset in Codex. In addition, from June 11, 2026 to June 24, 2026, eligible Plus and Pro users can invite friends and earn up to 3 more banked rate-limit resets.

Official sources:

So do not rush to shout “four free resets for everyone.” The more accurate version is: eligible users may get one launch reset, plus up to three referral rewards during the promotion. Whether you see the entry point and whether the reward can be redeemed depends on your account, plan, region, promotion status, and the invitee’s eligibility.

What this reset actually is

This is not API credit, not cash balance, and not a transferable coupon.

The official terms call it a rate-limit reset. Its purpose is to reset eligible Codex usage limits so you can continue using Codex within the current limit window.

It mainly affects limits shown in the Codex experience, such as usage windows in the Codex app or related Codex surfaces. Do not treat it as:

  1. OpenAI API credit.
  2. Points that can be withdrawn.
  3. A redeemable code that can be sold to someone else.
  4. Unlimited access for all ChatGPT features.

If you ran into a Codex 5-hour window or weekly limit, this reset is the thing that may help.

One launch free reset

In the ChatGPT Release Notes on June 11, 2026, OpenAI wrote that eligible Plus and Pro users now have rate-limit reset banking, including one free reset at launch.

If your account is eligible, you can look for it in Codex:

  1. Open the Codex app.
  2. Click the profile or settings menu in the lower-left corner.
  3. Look for entries related to usage, rate limits, or resets.
  4. If an available reset appears, follow the on-screen instructions.

Some users may see a menu similar to “1 reset available.” After clicking it and confirming the reset, the related Codex remaining usage is refreshed.

If you do not see the entry point, possible reasons include:

  1. Your Codex app version is too old.
  2. Your account or plan is not eligible.
  3. Your region or workspace is not supported.
  4. You already used the launch reset.
  5. The feature is still being rolled out.

Update the Codex app first, then check the settings menu and usage page again.

Invite friends for up to 3 more

The Codex Pricing documentation is more specific: from June 11, 2026 to June 24, 2026, eligible Plus and Pro users can invite up to 3 friends.

When an eligible invitee sends their first Codex message, both the inviter and invitee receive one banked rate-limit reset.

So this is not “send an invitation and instantly get a reset.” At minimum, the flow needs these steps:

  1. You are eligible to send the invitation.
  2. The invitee accepts through the official invitation flow.
  3. The invitee meets the promotion requirements.
  4. The invitee completes the required Codex action, usually sending a first Codex message.
  5. The system passes the eligibility checks.

Only then is the reset issued.

Who may not be eligible

The official terms do not turn every promotion into one fixed checklist because specific rewards, limits, expiration dates, and redemption conditions can vary by product display.

Still, the terms point to several common restrictions:

  1. Inviting yourself does not count.
  2. Using aliases, duplicate accounts, device links, or similar tricks to bypass limits may be treated as abuse.
  3. The invitee may need to be new to Codex or have not used Codex within a specified lookback period.
  4. If someone receives multiple invitations, usually only the first eligible invitation may count.
  5. Business workspaces have their own rules and are not the same as personal Plus or Pro promotions.
  6. ChatGPT Enterprise is currently not eligible for this type of referral.

So “up to 4 resets” is best understood as an upper limit, not a guarantee that every account can get all of them.

Resets expire

The official documentation says a banked rate-limit reset is available for 30 days after it is granted, unless a promotion says otherwise.

That matters. It is not something you can keep forever.

If you do receive a reset, it is better to use it when your Codex usage is tight, not immediately just because it appears. It is more valuable when your weekly limit is nearly exhausted, you are in the middle of a long task, or you need Codex to keep running through a project.

How to check whether you have the entry point

Try this order:

  1. Update the Codex app to the latest version.
  2. Sign in again to your ChatGPT or Codex account.
  3. Open the profile menu in the lower-left corner of Codex.
  4. Check usage, profile, rate-limit, and reset-related entries.
  5. Look for prompts such as Invite a friend, available reset, or banked reset.

If you use the CLI, you can also check whether Codex CLI has a /usage entry. The official documentation mentions /usage for checking account token usage or using rate-limit resets.

Whether the entry appears still depends on account eligibility and current product rollout.

What I do not recommend

Do not mass-register accounts, invite yourself, work around phone verification, buy accounts, or sell invitations just to get resets.

The official terms say duplicate redemptions, self-referrals, alias or address workarounds, device-linked self-referrals, and other suspected fraud or abuse may be ineligible. OpenAI can also revoke, terminate, or cancel rewards when abuse is suspected.

This promotion is suitable for inviting real friends or coworkers to try Codex. It is not worth turning into a gray-area farming project.

Short conclusion

This Codex reset promotion can be understood like this:

  1. Eligible Plus and Pro users may receive one launch rate-limit reset.
  2. From June 11, 2026 to June 24, 2026, eligible Plus and Pro users can invite up to 3 friends.
  3. After an eligible invitee sends a first Codex message, both sides may receive one banked rate-limit reset.
  4. A banked reset is usually available for 30 days.
  5. It is not API credit and cannot be transferred, sold, or redeemed for cash.

If you already use Codex, it is worth checking the lower-left menu. If the entry appears, follow the official flow. If it does not, do not overthink it; your account or region may simply not be eligible yet.
