There are at least five kinds of confusing data in Atlas: Web history, cookies, browser memory, ChatGPT Memory and chat history.
“Clearing history” does not mean that all data has been cleared, and “turning on traceless” does not mean that you are invisible to other participants on the network.
This article breaks down the data objects corresponding to each switch and explains them.
First use a table to distinguish the five types of data
| Data | Main purpose | Typical deletion entry |
|---|---|---|
| Web History | Address suggestions and access records | Settings → Web Browsing |
| Cookie / Site Data | Stay logged in to the site | Clear site data for browsing data |
| Browser memories | Form quotable facts based on browsing | Personalization |
| ChatGPT Memory | Cross-Chat Personalization | ChatGPT Memory Settings |
| Chats | Conversation History | Data controls |
These objects are related to each other, but are not in the same bucket.
The official clearly stated that Browser memories and ChatGPT Memory are controlled independently.
Deleting all chats will not automatically delete your browser memory or cookies.
When Web History is deleted, associated Browser memories are also deleted.
Turn off browser memory
Open:
|
|
After turning off the switch, don’t just look at the button status.
Go to View browser memories and check existing records.
Items that no longer wish to be referenced should be archived or deleted.
Then close the settings page to access a new public article.
Go back to the sidebar and ask for “Recommendations based on my recent viewing.”
The answer shouldn’t be to deposit new pages into browser memory that can be recalled later.
The training switch has two levels
Atlas’ web training controls rely on a master switch.
The path is:
|
|
Include web browsing` is turned off by default.
It controls whether browsed web content can be used for model improvement.
Whether a ChatGPT conversation is used for training is still affected by the account’s main training settings.
Therefore, only web training is turned off and chat training settings are not automatically changed.
Conversely, don’t assume that one switch represents all data control.
Diagnostic log is not a training switch
Help improve browsing & search is enabled by default.
It allows sending technical diagnostic logs, which may contain public URLs.
Officials clearly distinguish it from model training.
If your goal is to reduce diagnostic data, this should be turned off separately.
If the goal is to prevent web pages from being used for training, check Include web browsing.
The two goals are different and the operations are also different.
How to select the range when deleting history
The entrance is in Web Browsing of Settings.
Optional times typically include 15 minutes, 1 hour, 24 hours, 7 days, 4 weeks, and all.
First use the minimum time range to deal with accidentally accessed pages.
Deleted items can include chat, Web History, cookies, cache, download history, passwords, and site settings.
Don’t make a habit of selecting them all.
If you only want to clear the memory brought by a certain page, delete the related Web History first.
If you just want to exit a website, it is more appropriate to delete the site’s cookies.
If the password manager is functioning properly, do not clear the password data easily.
Why does it appear to be still there after deletion?
Official reminder changes may take time to refresh.
Exit Atlas completely before reopening it.
Make sure you are viewing the correct personal account or workspace.
Personal accounts and workspaces have different settings, memories, and content.
If the URL still appears in the address bar, it may be from bookmarks rather than history.
If the site remains logged in, it may be coming from a cookie rather than Browser memory.
Using data types to explain phenomena is more reliable than repeatedly “clearing all”.
What does incognito mode actually isolate?
The shortcut keys are:
|
|
Atlas Incognito activity is not linked to a ChatGPT account or saved in browser history.
The window’s cookies, site data, and form content are not retained after the session.
But Incognito is not an anonymous network.
Employers, schools, ISPs and visited websites may still see activity.
If you log in to ChatGPT again in an incognito window, the behavioral boundaries at the account level will also change.
The official also stated that unlogged chats may be retained for 30 days to prevent abuse.
Therefore, “traceless means leaving nothing behind” is inaccurate.
Page visibility is more granular than global shutdown
Some people need to use Ask ChatGPT on public web pages, but don’t want it to read the financial backend.
ChatGPT page visibility can be adjusted in the page settings of the address bar.
When closed, the page does not access Browser memories, nor is it used to generate sidebar answers.
Pages suitable for closing by default include:
-
Password reset page.
-
API Keys Console.
-
Customer profile.
-
Medical and insurance page.
-
Company internal monitoring panel.
Public documents and open source repositories can be temporarily opened based on tasks.
Device-side summary for macOS 26
The official documentation mentions that macOS 26 users can choose on-device summaries.
When enabled, web content can be summarized on the device side, avoiding the need to send web content to the server for summary.
This doesn’t mean all Atlas network requests go away.
Still check the connections for chat, search, account sync, and the website itself separately.
It is most accurate to understand it as the selection of “summary processing location”.
You must check the enterprise restrictions before enabling the work account.
OpenAI currently marks Atlas Business/Enterprise as early access.
Officials advise caution with regulatory, confidential or production data.
Atlas-specific data does not necessarily cover existing data residency, audit export, and retention requirements.
The enterprise page also lists capability limitations such as SIEM, eDiscovery, IP allowlist, and version pinning.
When the administrator turns on Agent mode, it does not mean that the compliance review is completed.
The true go-live threshold should be determined by security, legal and IT.
Do a repeatable privacy acceptance
Prepare a test page without sensitive information.
Record the following initial state:
|
|
Visit the test page and start a new chat.
Confirm that the sidebar cannot read hidden pages.
Close the window and reopen Atlas.
Check that history, memories, and chat are as expected.
Open an incognito window and repeat again.
Enter the test date, Atlas version, and account type into the record.
You can retest when the version is updated in the future, rather than judging based on impressions.
Common misunderstandings
Will cookies disappear after closing Browser memories?
No.
Website login status is maintained primarily by cookies and site data.
Will deleting the chat delete the browsing history?
There is no automatic equivalence.
Web History should be explicitly selected in the deletion interface.
Can Incognito bypass corporate network audits?
No.
Incognito mainly limits local persistence and does not change the network path.
Business data can be put into production key without training?
It shouldn’t be derived this way.
“No training” is just a data usage commitment and does not equal complete credential isolation and compliance coverage.
Finally select settings by target
If you want less personalization, turn off Browser memories.
If you do not want web pages to be used for training, turn off Include web browsing.
If you do not want to send browsing diagnostics, turn off Help improve browsing & search.
If you don’t want ChatGPT to read a page, turn off the page visibility.
If you want to clear the website login, delete the corresponding cookie.
If you want to clear access and associated memory, delete the corresponding Web History.
By handling it by object, there will be no misjudgments like “you can still see everything after clearing it all” or “you only turn off one switch but think everything is turned off”.

Review monthly rather than trusting initial settings permanently
Browser updates may add new data switches, and workspace administrators may adjust policies. Record monthly status of Atlas version, account type, Browser memories, web training, diagnostic logs, and page visibility.
If a switch disappears, first confirm whether you are currently using a personal account or a corporate workspace, and then check the administrator policy and official release instructions; do not interpret “not visible in the interface” as meaning that it has been turned off.
Before changing computers, export the data you need to keep, and then delete history, browser memory, and shared links. The data transfer is not completed until the old device is removed from the account’s device list.
The review record only saves the switch status, and does not include the actual browsing history or memory text.
