ChatGPT Atlas Mac installation and migration: How to deal with default browser, bookmarks, passwords and extensions

ChatGPT Atlas Mac installation and browser migration tutorial explains system requirements, default browser settings, bookmark password import, extension compatibility, fallback plan and acceptance method.

Google Trends US lists “chatgpt atlas” as a rising related query for “AI browser”.

This article doesn’t discuss concepts, but deals with the things that can actually stall migrations: How to bring over old browser data, what data should not be imported, and how to return to Chrome or Safari without loss after trial.

Atlas is currently officially defined as a macOS browser, so Windows users should not download so-called installation packages from unknown sources.

Before downloading, determine whether it is suitable for the main force to use.

The value of Atlas lies in the Ask ChatGPT sidebar, page context, and Agent browsing capabilities.

These capabilities also mean that the browser is exposed to more web content than a regular chat window.

If your daily work involves online banking, medical records, customer backend, or production keys, it is recommended to use Atlas as a second browser.

Keep the original browser for at least a week and do not uninstall it immediately upon first launch.

Check the macOS version first:

1
2
sw_vers
uname -m

arm64 stands for Apple Silicon and x86_64 stands for Intel Mac.

The installation package can only be accessed from the official OpenAI Atlas page.

Check the app signature in Finder after downloading:

1
2
codesign -dv --verbose=4 "/Applications/ChatGPT Atlas.app" 2>&1
spctl -a -vv "/Applications/ChatGPT Atlas.app"

The second command should give the signature conclusion accepted by the system.

Don’t shut down Gatekeeper just to pass the check.

Do not select all to import when starting for the first time.

Browser migration usually contains four types of objects: bookmarks, history, passwords, and extensions.

Bookmarks have the lowest risk and can be imported first.

History can mix work and private browsing, and whether to import it or not depends on whether you want address bar suggestions.

Passwords are the most sensitive. It is recommended to confirm Atlas’s password storage and device protection methods before deciding whether to migrate.

Extensions need to be installed individually because extensions have the ability to read web pages, modify requests, or access the clipboard.

A more secure order is:

  1. Only import bookmarks.

  2. Log into a low-risk website to test cookies.

  3. Install the official extension for your password manager.

  4. History and other extensions are evaluated last.

After the import is complete, check the three folders instead of just looking at the total number of bookmarks.

Select a bookmark with a Chinese title, a multi-level folder, and a URL with query parameters.

If all three are normal, it means that the encoding, hierarchy and complete URL are not damaged.

Do a side-by-side trial before making Atlas your default browser

It is recommended to use it for three days in parallel.

Only public profiles will be opened on the first day.

The next day, test the login and download of commonly used SaaS.

The third day tested video conferencing, payment jumps, and external application callbacks.

Check that the current default browser can be opened:

1
系统设置 → 桌面与程序坞 → 默认网页浏览器

Verify system URL distribution from terminal after switching:

1
open "https://example.com/?atlas-default-test=1"

If the link is still taken over by the old browser, exit both browsers and try again.

Some menu bar tools cache the default browser and require a separate restart.

Least-privileged approach to scaling migrations

Don’t install a dozen extensions at once.

List existing Chrome extensions first:

1
chrome://extensions/

It is divided into five groups according to usage: password, development, ad filtering, downloading and productivity.

Keep only one extension per group that is really needed.

Check site access permissions after installation.

For extensions that can be set to “On Click”, do not grant “All Sites”.

Developers should especially check out proxies, request rewriting, and cookie management extensions.

These three types of extensions may change the pages seen by Atlas Agent and complicate troubleshooting.

Do not rely on copying the browser directory to migrate the login state

Directly copying the Chrome Profile may seem like a hassle-free process, but it can easily lead to key chain, cookie encryption, and version incompatibility issues.

The correct approach is to log back into key sites.

Prepare your recovery code and hardware key before exiting your old browser session.

Enterprise SSO users test the following four links:

  • Identity provider login.

  • MFA Challenge.

  • Redirect back to business website.

  • Log out and then log back in.

Just verifying that “the page can be opened” is not enough.

You must confirm that download, upload, camera, microphone, and notification permissions are as expected.

Downloads and external protocols are the areas most likely to be missed

Download a small PDF, a ZIP and a no-extension file.

Confirm that the file name is not garbled and the save location is as expected.

Then test mailto:, meeting links and IDE deep links.

1
open "mailto:[email protected]?subject=Atlas%20test"

If the external protocol prompt is unclear, cancel first and do not click Allow continuously.

When permanent authorization is required, record which application, which protocol and which domain name.

Let Ask ChatGPT look at page visibility before looking at it

The page context of Atlas is not “must be opened at all times”.

ChatGPT page visibility can be controlled in the page settings in the address bar.

It is recommended to turn off the visibility of account background, key console and private documents.

Ordinary documents, public news and open source repositories can be opened on demand.

The verification method is simple: ask the sidebar for current page details after turning off visibility.

It should not continue to reference the content of the page just closed.

When a problem occurs, first distinguish between a browser problem and a website problem.

The same URL is opened once in Safari, once in Chrome, and once in Atlas.

Only extensions, cookies, and page permissions are checked first if Atlas fails.

If all three browsers fail, it’s more likely the problem is the network, DNS, or the website itself.

Opening an Atlas incognito window eliminates most extensions and old cookie interference.

When incognito is available and the normal window is unavailable, clear the single-station data first instead of clearing the entire history.

Wait a week before deciding whether to keep it as default

Record the results in a simple table:

project pass standard
Log in SSO and MFA are repeatable
download The three types of file names and contents are normal.
Expand Install only necessary extensions with minimal permissions
privacy Sensitive websites are invisible by default
callback Meetings, emails and IDE deep links are normal
rollback Original browser bookmarks and passwords are still available

If any of these fail, there is no need to force Atlas to be the default.

AI browsers are suitable as task tools, rather than necessarily replacing entire browsing habits.

How to restore the original browser

First change back to Safari or Chrome in system settings.

Export new bookmarks in Atlas.

Make sure there are no unarchived files in the download directory.

Sign out of your Atlas account and revoke shared links you no longer use.

The final decision is whether to delete the app.

Do not delete the entire user Library directory manually.

That approach could accidentally harm other OpenAI applications or browser data.

Migration acceptance checklist

  • The installation package comes from the official domain name.

  • System signature verification passed.

  • The bookmark hierarchy and Chinese titles are normal.

  • The password is not transferred in a clear text file.

  • Extensions are installed with least privileges.

  • The system redirect of the default browser has been verified.

  • ChatGPT visibility for sensitive pages is turned off.

  • The original browser still retains available fallback paths.

After completing these checks and using Atlas as your main browser, migration costs and privacy risks will be more controllable.

Atlas installation information

Check macOS permissions after migration

The first time Atlas calls notifications, microphones, cameras, or screen content, macOS will pop up authorization respectively. Don’t allow all apps at once just because they are from the official website. You should authorize them again when you actually use the corresponding functions.

Open the location below for review:

1
2
3
4
5
6
7
系统设置
└─ 隐私与安全性
   ├─ 摄像头
   ├─ 麦克风
   ├─ 屏幕与系统录音
   ├─ 辅助功能
   └─ 文件与文件夹

Ordinary web browsing does not require accessibility features or full disk access. If Atlas does not use related functions but requires these two high permissions, you should first refuse and check the official instructions.

The camera and microphone can be verified using the meeting test page. After authorizing once, go back to the system settings and confirm that only the applications you actually need are in the list.

Bookmarks export as recoverable backup

After completing the one-week trial, export new Atlas bookmarks to HTML. Open the exported file with a text editor and confirm that the Chinese title, folder hierarchy, and URL query parameters are still present.

Do not upload bookmark files containing internal system addresses to public cloud disks. Enterprise environments can be put into encrypted disk images or saved to an organization-approved password manager add-on.

Recovery testing should be done in a temporary browser profile. After the import is successful, spot-check deep folders to avoid backup files that only have top-level entries but are mistakenly considered complete.

Revoke website session before uninstalling

Deleting the browser app will not automatically invalidate active sessions on the website. For email, code hosting, cloud console and payment platform, first go to the account security page to cancel the corresponding login session of Atlas.

If the device session cannot be distinguished, changing the password or performing “Exit all devices” will affect other terminals, MFA and recovery codes should be prepared in advance.

Finally check the download directory, bookmark export and password manager sync. Only after confirming the three before uninstalling can the migration be considered truly rollable.
